The motte from the west
Arkholme, along with the other fortified sites on the Lune, once defended the borders of the lands of Roger de Poitou, a vassal of King William II. For supporting Rufus's 1092 campaigns in Cumbria, Roger was granted vast estates in northern Lancashire.
