For everyone interested in Middle Eastern castles, try to get your hands on the following book: 'Castles and Churches of the Crusading Kingdom' by TSR. Boase with photographs by Richard Cleave, Oxford University Press, 1967. It contains really great color pictures, maps and drawings of a lot of Middle Eastern castles.------------------ "A man's house is his castle" Visit my website at http://www.castles.nl/ [This message has been edited by Marko (edited 10-30-2001).] |

Sounds great. Does it discuss arab as well as christian castles? Which areas are included and how many castles does it cover? Does it give floor plans? Pesky, aren't I! Erik |

Well, again a question of definitions. For what is a christian and what is an arab castle. A lot of castles were built by the christians but overtaken by arabs who altered them to their own likings and possessed them for a longer period then the christians. The book however covers 16 castles in more detail and images and some 20 castles in less detail. It gives floorplans for 5 castles. The areas it describes are of course the areas involved in the crusades; Israel, Lebanon, Syria, a small piece of southern-east Turkey and a little piece of Jordania (or is it spelled Jordan?) To give you an idea of the castles described and pictured in the book I posted two pictures in the COTW Picture Archive.[This message has been edited by Marko (edited 10-30-2001).] |

A thank you to Marko! I posted a question asking for resources for plans and information regarding Saracen castles in the Middle East the other day in the Plans forum. I am glad I decided to browse this one, as this book looks like just the thing. Grateful thanks! Cthulhu |
