I'm planning a trip to Scotland in late June, early July. If anyone could give me some info on a castle I could stay in while I'm there, that would be great! My price range is about $100-$200 a night, depending on the Castle, location, and history. I would like to stay in a castle with a rich Heritage, but not too pricey. Once again, any information would be wonderful...Thanks! |

My favourite, as a place to stay at reasonable rates, is Culcreuch Castle near Stirling - It's a typical Scottish tower house. The Chinese Bird Room is particularly splendid - it has genuine C17 hand painted wall paper and is furnished with antiques.Others I like include Ballencrieff Castle and Balgonie Castle. Both of these are tower houses and not especially expensive. Fernie Castle has good food, but lacks the character of the castles I've mentioned already. If I can presume to make a general comment, I'd recommend that you look for somewhere that has maintained some original character and atmosphere (I'm afraid this'll mean sacrificing some of the 'nice' facilities that are typically expected by Americans!).
