The Norman conquest of England in 1066 followed by King William's castle building program changed the culture and customs of the nation forever.
Take a look here http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/laws_of_william_the_conqueror.htm
As for which country has most castles, I've no idea.

Which country has the most castles? That's a very difficult question as noone knows any exact numbers. If you are asking for most castles per km2, then I'd say Switzerland. If you ask for the highest number in total, then you should look at Germany or France.

I guess that this brings us back to the true definition of what a "castle" is.
My best guess would be Wales as having the most
true castles per square mile or Km2.

haha, I can think of at least two other regions who also want to be in the race: Southern Tirol in Italy, and the Pfalz in Germany. but well, it does not really matter

Castles did not just affect culture, castles WERE culture. The castles were the main bases of operations for the most powerful people in Europe. They showed off wealth, were used for defense and secrecy, and kept the local populence under control. They were also very cold, drafty, and unpleasant. But they look nice.
As for which country has the most castles, I'd put my money on France or Germany, definatly. But remember, some castles are actually more recent than the Middle Ages. It depends what time period you're looking for.
