We need help researching floor plans and construction of border tower houses in 16th century Scotland. Were they built the same as castle constuction? Also, does anyone know what women worked as back then? Thanks! |

Scottish border tower houses are essentially castles - some would dispute this, saying that only earlier, more complex buildings are 'true' castles, but most would accept that tower houses (in Ireland as well as Scotland) are indeed castles, even if they are relatively late and simple in plan. (If the people who built them called them castles, who are we to argue?) The construction methods used in tower houses were essentially the same as those used in earlier castles, though the plan of a tower house and the architectural details (doorways, windows, etc.) used in it could be quite distinctive - castle builders in the 16th century would have wanted to keep up with the latest fashions in decorative architecture, but the more mundane aspect of castle construction (wall construction, drainage etc.) would have changed little. After a very quick search I found a list of castles in the Scottish Borders (www.castles.org/Chatelaine/berwick.htm), but I'm sure further research on particular castles would prove useful. You could try looking for information on Threave Castle - a tower house in southern Scotland that has had a lot of research carried out on it. Enjoy your search! |
