Lewes Castle is looked after by the Sussex Archaeological Trust. They have produced in the past an interesting and comprehensive Guidebook - although it is aver 10 years since I've visited the site. They can be contacted on the web at www.sussexpast.co.uk.

Hi Pat
Sorry to say Castle Acre is in Norfolk, which is a long way from Lewes but to the east is Pevensey, Herstmonceux, Hastings Castles and a must is Battle Abbey and the Battle of Hastings Battlefield, all together a good range of castles and the top battle site, all within 25 miles.
Yours Chris

A long way? A day's drive? Two? Back when my husband and I rented a car in London, it was possible to drive to Scotland in one day. All that may have changed due to traffic, road construction, etc. My children live far from me in the States. When I jump in the car, it is usual for me to drive 400 miles/kilomters? in one day to visit them.
Is Norfolk that far from E. Sussex?
thanx,
Pat D.

It is still possible to do the Highlands of Scotland from Dover in less then 8 hours as
the construction or trafic is not near as bad as in the states.
Its a simple matter of customs and cultures. In the UK the young do the most driving as in distance. Even their 'long haul' trucks don't have sleeper cabs as they stop after every so many hours.

For you, Norfolk is relatively close to Sussex - 2 hours on a good day, but double that if during the busy early morning or early evening incorrectly-named "rush hour".

Hi Pat
Lewes to Castle Acre is 167 miles north on the A27-A23-M23-M25-M11-A11-A14-A1065, 3 hours plus on a good day. What about Conisbrough Castle and Sandal Castle both top de Warenne castles, see them and make a day of it!!!!!!!

3 hours for 167 miles Chris !! Is that in an old banger ?

Seriously though, Chris IS probably closer, Pat. It just depends on how fast you drive.

I can't wait to fly over the big pond to visit Warenne castles. Never heard of Conisbrough or Sandal? Will look them up. TV programs here highlight people afraid to fly, but driving these days is also a hassle. Last trip west saw 50/60 lorries lined up for Interstate inspection. Remember the good old days. Never had much baggage inspection except in Ethiopia on the way back from Kenyan safari. Friends next door going to Egypt next month, but don't think I have that much courage. What do you think? Flying safe or unsafe?

Your as safe now as you always have been in an aircraft.
The last trip over to the UK the Civilian jet liner my wife and i were in suffered a broken wing spar, i know the sound after being in a military plane that got hit by air to ground fire, both times we landed shaken but safely and not stirred.
The choice is yours and no one can make it for you or predict the outcome.

All times are PT (US)
