You said that it wasn't for sale at any price, but who owns it? It's a museum, right? Well If someone were to have enough money is it possible to buy it? Or what would it cost to build an exact replica of that castle? |

Bodium castle is owned by the National Trust. This is a charity set up to preserve the national heritage of England and Wales (Scotland has it's own National Trust). The executive group that runs the trust can be an arrogant bunch with quirky ways, they resisted the members demands to stop fox hunting on Trust property for many years. However I can not see that they would every survive a plan to sell Bodium castle, even if they were stupid enough to consider it. The membership of the trust would lynch them. Hence Bodium Castle is not for sale at any price. However if you join the National Trust you will own a tiny bit of Bodium Castle (along with a few million other people)------------------

Personally I not a member of the National Trust, which, while it generally does good work, has a tendence, in my opinion, to be a organisation used by the old landed gentry to avoid paying death duty and to get the common folk to pay for the up keep of the grand houses which they continue to live in. This does not apply to Bodium Castle, which is uninhabited.------------------

Just to reinforce the point that Philip has made, money does not buy everything. The national bodies which own many of our more historically important sites were set up with a remit to preserve them for the nation, and selling them is not legally within the powers of the governmental bodies at any rate. It is rumoured that an offer was made by an American to buy Bothwell Castle in Lanarkshire, and since Historic Scotland do not even have the power to consider an offer, it was passed to the Secretary of State for consideration. It was apparently dismissed out of hand simply because it has been preserved as a national asset. I suspect that as Philip suggests, if an offer were received for such a property, and accepted, that questions would be asked and heads roll at a govenment level.------------------

You asked "what would it cost to build an exact replica". As a castle builder I have to ask you this, how much do you want it? Enough to make the builder{who ever it might be} a very wealthy man and to put his kids through ivy league collages?
I'm not saying you can't or should not build, But you might consider the problems and cost before getting your heart set on only one type of castle.
