Seeking photos of Ducketts Grove Castle, Carlow, Ireland. Also, desparately searching for proof of, or information concerning, my great-great grandfather, Patrick Alexander Duckett's having descended from Thomas Duckett, founder of Ducketts Grove. In 1838, Patrick married Catherine Meares in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland, at Sts. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church. I'm sixty-one years old. Many, many thanks for any help you may be able to give me. myrt-1-2@penn.com |

Judging by the number of enquiries there seems to be plenty of scope for someone to put together a comprehensive site listing Irish castles!Levan |

Thanks Levan, How can we help? This is really bold, but I hope people in Ireland take pity on our pleas and kindly pass on any information about the castles in Ireland that they might have. I hope I haven't made myself the "Ugly American". Love Ya, Ireland! Sincerely, Cecelia------------------

It would certainly be an ambitious project, producing a web page simply listing all of the sites would involve much effort and research. To produce one with information as well would take much commitment and enthusiasm. It is indeed a gap in web based references, and a much needed one as Levan's comment points out. Mike Salter has a gazeteer on Irish Castle sites,('The Castles and Stronghouses of Ireland'). The web pages available for Ireland tend to cover a few better known sites, making searching for other individual sites a laborious business. A comprehensive page as Levan suggests would no doubt be very popular and most definately welcome. Should anyone produce or come across such a page, please let us know.------------------ 'Give me the groves that lofty brave, The storms, by Castle Gordon'. As far as someone on here setting up something like that...if he had time, I'd suggest Savoy...but he may have his hands full restoring Casa De Savoy. Bluewater |

According to Thompson (The Decline of The Castle) Ireland has a vast amount of towerhouses. Most of the south western Irish counties each have more towerhouses than the whole of England. Get a reasonable comprehensive list of Irish castle would be a major task. I've spent over a year on my listing of English and Welsh castles and am still not fully finished. However I my get round to looking at Ireland sometime in the future. (My immediate future plan is to add The Isle of Man and the Channel Isles to my listings)------------------ Neurotics build castles in the air, psychotics live in them, Psychiatrists charge the rent, art therapists do the interior design and nurses clean out the garderobes! http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/index.html |

Hey there Philip. In my talks with Savoy and a few others, indeed Ireland has its share of tower houses and/or small keeps. Apparently many of them are for sale (or could be bought if approached landowner etc). Maybe Savoy has a list...hmm. Savoy, you out there? http://www.tipp.ie/ballytarsna.htm is the link to his site (he is restoring his castle/towerhouse...Ballytarsna Castle (Towerhouse) in Tipperary Cty, Ireland).
