I am fascinated by Henry the 8th and Anne Boleyn, is it true that while married to Anne, King Henry did reside in Lancaster Castle? Also is Lancaster Castle actually in Lancaster or is it in Tunstull? Is it also true that it is occupied by 12 wealthy families who have made it into apartments? And one last question, I heard it is the only castle left in England with a working mote, is that true? I would love for any replies, thank you. |

Hi Anne, think you have crossed wires here. Lancaster Castle is indeed in Lancaster. But is in fact a jail & local courthouse. If anything it is one of the few castles still used as such. A working motte ... er! A motte is a mound, on which a castle or fortified structure was placed. As far as I know the only Henry who had anything over much to do with the castle was Henry IV. Who carried out major works on the structure. It is most likely another site that you have in mind. When you find out let us know, and we will do what we can to help. |

Thurland Castle is the name of the castle I was looking for, It is about 15 miles from Lancaster, thanks for the info though! Any info you may have on this castle that I am interested in would be greatly appreciated too. |

Hi. I can find very little information on this site. Only the moat remains of Thurland Castle, which was a 15th century fortified house, and home of the Tunstalls. The house was completely rebuilt in the 1880s following a fire. Andrew |
