I have a painting of a castle. On the back are 2 words. Brugge and Ezelpaort. Does anyone have any clues on where this castle is located? Is there a casle named Ezelpaort? If so where in the world is it? I am thinking Holland, but I have had no luck on any internet search. |

Cynthia,I must correct you; you don't have a painting of a castle but of a citygate. The "Ezelspoort", as it is spelled correctly, is a citygate in the medieval citywalls of the Belgium town of Brugge. As some gates were heavily fortified in those days, they can have the appearance of a castle. Especially when the connecting citywalls were torn down with the passing of time. The name translates into English as donkeygate. Below are two links with pictures of the gate: - http://www.vum.be/dsp17062.html , shows the gate from a distance at two-third down the page and - http://www.iec.nhl.nl/pabo/geschiedenis/hanze/1/ezel.htm ------------------ "A man's house is his castle" Visit my website at http://www.castles.nl/ [This message has been edited by Marko (edited 05-24-2001).] |

Marko, You hit it right on the head. I downloaded the pictures and there it was! All this time I thought it was a castle! What a beautiful gate though! Thank you for solving a mystery! |
