I lived in German from 1986-1988 between the Rhine and Mosel rivers. During my Junior High years, we took two tours of a particualr castle ruin along the Rhine, I believe although it may have been the Mosel river, but the name of the castle escapes me. It had a bunch a tunnels in which visitors could bring a candle or flashlights and tour them on their own pace with only a couple being shut off from the public so no one would get hurt in them. I know it had a small shopping area with either a small resteraunt or cafe just a brief walk from the ruin. I want to show my Daughter this place along with others I had been to. |

Phew ! Adara, I think we might need a bit more. Have visited several castles in that area myself, and it could be any of them. As many of them are high above the river, the majority have tunnels for storage\wine etc. Even formentioned Burg Eltz (which is in woods) has a shop & tunnels. Cochem, is a well known town with castle on the Mosel. On the Rhine you have Burg klopp (above Bigen), which is the seat of the town council & also a folk museum. Burg Rheinstein, Burg Reichenstein, Castle Sooneck (which has guided tours), Burg Stahleck, Schonburg Castle, Burg Katz. These are just a few which may be visited, as they are in good condition. |

I found the ruin. While doing a search today a name triggered my memory. It is Burg Rhienfels in St. Goar, Germany.[This message has been edited by Adara Wilona (edited 06-19-2001).] | |
