alex31 Member	posted 05-10-2005 05:36 PM I am helping my son 9 year old son who needs to know a few thing if anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated. 1, How long did it take to build any castle does not need to be a particular castle just any castle? 2. When the sword and the sheild are shown together is that the crest? If not whatis it called? 3. What was the weapon called that was the stick with the ball on the end of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a confused mom

I may not be very smart about the castles themselves but I do know my weapons! the ball on a stick thing is called a mace. when they had spiky things coming out of them or pieces of metal coming out of the side it was a flanged mace. If the stick had a chain attatched to it with a ball on the end it was called a morning star, and whenever there was more than one ball on the end it was just called a flail. Maces and other things club-like were especially useful for fighting armored opponents. whenever armor making was at its highest point swords could no longer cut it so blunt weapons like the mace, war hammer and the axe became very important. whenever I talk about war hammers don't think about the big slegehammer thing, that was a maul it was used primarily by peasants, war hammers were not much longer than your average hardware store version, but the handles were not made out of wood but metal and instead of a nail puller on the back they had a spike for penetrating tough armor. i believe that there are other posts in the forum that were posted last year about how long castles took to build I remember that it was usually years. most of the time shields had stuff called heraldry on them so you could be identified in battle but whenever it was on paper it was called a crest.
