Hello! I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me. I am doing a Grade Eight research project on Dover Castle and was wondering: Did Dover Castle have a moat? Did it have dungeons and if so, what were they like? And what were the bathrooms like? Thanks, sorry for so many questions. Thank you!

Hi, Dover does indeed have a moat, a very deep one in fact. By "bathrooms" I'm guessing that you are refering to the gardrobes (Latrines)which would consist of a hole in the floor leading to the outside walls. Bathing would be carried out by using a wooden tub. As for dungeons, I don't think so but the keep was used to house prisoners of war in the 18th century. Some photos and a brief history, including an account of the great siege of 1216 can be found at my website. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/castles/page13.html
