Hello,My husband and I would like to inquire about job opportunities in a castle. We will be going to Europe before the end of this year and are looking into working in a castle. It is our dream to live and work in a medieval castle. Can anyone help us achieving our dream ? Thank you, Marie-Josee

In the short term ... blunt answer is no.
Most places operate on a small staff. And there are not many of those. If you look under 'General Discussion', you will see a note I placed there a few days ago, 'Medieval Pop-Star'. That type of advertised job is very rare indeed. Most jobs would be for the kitchens or waiting-on. Any extra staff is normally supplied through agencies, ie; for something like a big wedding etc. |

You are joking right? You want to work in a castle? Umm yea. Let me just inform you on something. Castles are cold and drafty designed to keep out and kill their enemies! Any ideas on why people stopped living in castles? Well basically its because they are not fun to live in. As for you aspiring to work in one. Way to dream high! Castle staff were the poor unimportant unsuccesful people. If you weren't important you lived in a thatched roof house with the animals, were a serf on the mannor, or ta-da your dream were crashed down in a disguisting dirt job in the castle. Hope you love your job. ------------------

Well, social and architectural circumstances today are not the same as they used to be 800 years ago. With a minimum of modern technology, there are many castles that I can imagine would be a pleasure to live or work in today. |

I should first stress that it is no way anyone else's job to belittle the dreams of anyone else, reguardless of gradure. Be it king of a statly manor or that of a working freeman. It doesn't take much wits to figure out that it was the serving men and women that kept a castle running! Thank the gods above that we are no longer born to a certain right. As Peter had mentioned, I too have heard little reguarding positions available among keeps and castles still in function abroad. There are however, many whom have created their dreams of building medieval castles here in the US, and I am sure, many that could use exta hands, depending on the sort of work you do. You may look to them for aid in your dreams. I know a few like the Tirion Castle project, as well as the Thorton Castle project that hold high hopes of achieving these goals, with many showing the same manner of interest in the near future. Perhaps something such as the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) or some other such historical recreation group could help in this as well? We too are building a castle (fashioned after historical aspects) but are taking the advantage to use modern techniques to make sure that the hygiene, clanliness and comfort are above that of Medieval dictate, which maintaining the historical feel. We have just located a parcel of land just over 1000 acres that seems fitting for such a purpose, with a completion date of Summer 2010. Just remember that where there is a will, there is always a way! Best of luck in you & your family's hopes Josee! A 1,000 acres !You have a plot half the size of Wales ?

I'm new to this site so forgive me for being pert, but those of you who would smash the dreams of others and dissapoint them lead me to feel they are lower than the dirt the servants of a castle would walk upon. So, that said, I'll reply to the question, I do not know of any specifics and what you want will take some time and serching but I do beleive that you will be able to find some work in a castle, though they are not as popular or often lived in as they used to be, they are still there and they are still as big, leading us to the point they still need as much work. Lady Galla,
May I inquire as to the location of your lands? It has also been a great passion of mine to bring this dream to reality and I have finally gathered a group and we are on the path.
I do have a thought that perhaps I should not try to reinvent a well made wheel and simply join other already progressing travelers on the path.
Would you be so kind as to give us an update of your progression and/or let me know if something of this nature would interest you.------------------
