Hi,Everyone. As I'm currently looking into the history of Burton-in-Lonsdale motte, I'm looking for information about the line of a possible medieval route that that ran from Lancaster to York, via Burton. I know that in the 17th century, the highway passed by Burton, along the current A687 before joining the modern A65. From here, heading south-east, the route seems to have followed the contours of the southern Yorkshire Dales, crossing the Pennines through Airedale, and passing through Skipton and Knaresborough before approaching York from the north-west. If I can establish that this route is indeed much older than the 17th C, perhaps even medieval, then it would support the idea that Burton-in-Lonsdale motte also operated in defence of this important road route. If any one can offer any ideas about this intriguing possibility, I would be extremely interested to hear. Many Thanks. ------------------ Devine
