Generally castle architecture is dealt with in terms of the defensive aspects of the castle and castles tend to be split into different defensive types; motte and bailey, keep castles, enclosure castles, concentric castles which can span hundreds of years. Some good pages to look at castle architecure from this view are; http://www.britannia.com/history/david1.html http://www.radix.net/~mfeinberg/castles/types.html http://armouries.com/construct.htm However castles were also the homes of lords, who often wanted to show their wealth and power by being upto date with the best fashion. So many features of castles reflect the various architectral styles of the period when the castle was built. The styles basically fall into two groups; the romanesque (called norman in England) and the gothic. The sort of features that were decorated would be windows and doors. So you can have a norman keep castle like Castle Rising (see http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~mwcook/castle%20rising.html ) or a late gothic enclosure castle like Bodium (see http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~mwcook/bodiam.html or various other mixes. For infomation on architectral styles see; A good glossery of terms can be found at http://www.pitt.edu/~medart/menuglossary/INDEX.HTM ------------------ |
